It is an important step in reducing time to defibrillation and improving the sudden cardiac arrest survival rate.
First Aid & Safety of Texas' new AED program features four key elements. "According to the American Heart Association, a comprehensive AED program should include physician oversight, proper selection of the defibrillator, training, and coordination with local EMS", says Fran Riggs of First Aid & Safety of Texas.
AEDs are manufactured and sold under guidelines approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA may require someone who purchases an AED to present a physician's prescription for the device.
The selection and implementation of an AED is important. First Aid & Safety of Texas is a distributor for ZOLL Medical. "The AED Plus is the first and only full-rescue AED that provides Real CPR Help® for rate and depth of chest compressions. With real-time feedback the rescuer can provide the best manual CPR possible in a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The AED Plus also guides rescuers through the complete Chain of Survival helping all SCA victims, not just those who need a shock", according to Mark Thompson, Regional Manager for ZOLL.
"Anyone expected to use an AED in a cardiac emergency should be trained in CPR and the appropriate use of the AED device", says Riggs.
Communicating ahead of time with the local EMS can save crucial seconds in a cardiac emergency, improving chances of survival. "Although it is not required, it is suggested that you alert your local EMS of your AED program", says Riggs.
Only one out of every 20 SCA victims survives though many of these lives could be saved through early defibrillation. With a brief window of opportunity for effective treatment, it is vital that responders reach the victim and defibrillate within the first ten minutes of SCA. First Aid & Safety of Texas can assist health clubs with Automated External Defibrillator (AED) programs in their facilities. It is an important step in reducing time to defibrillation and improving the sudden cardiac arrest survival rate.
"American Heart Month is a good time to implement an AED program in your business or organization"
