Economic Trends For New Year

Feb. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Barry Asmus, Ph.D., senior economist at the National Center for Policy Analysis in Phoenix, AZ, shared his outlook for 2011 with Welding & Gases Today for its Annual Business Forecast, outlining 6 unstoppable economic trends impacting our world, our economy, our industry and our business. The article, entitled, “Six Unstoppable Economic Trends In 2011” appears in the Winter 2011 issue of Welding & Gases Today.

Among the trends Asmus points out is a shift in power from the Pacific Ocean, anchored by the U.S. and Japan, to the Indian Ocean, where India and China will be major factors in the global economy. “As we move into the 21st century, the power increasingly will be along the Indian Ocean,” says Asmus. “There are 37 countries that circle the Indian Ocean, including China and India. That is not to say that the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans—and therefore, the United States—won’t be very important. But the growth right now is around the Indian Ocean.”

Asmus is optimistic about economic recovery in 2011, projecting that local, labor-intensive organizations in the service sector will benefit from increased customer spending. “People are not spending money, and it’s the small, local, labor-intensive service areas that have been hit hardest,” he says. “They’ve had to make enormous adjustments, but 2011 will be the first year that will start to look better.”
