Outstanding Achievements Honored at ASFMRA’s 2010 Annual Meeting

The American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA) announced honorees at the 2010 ASFMRA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida held November 1-4.

Feb. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Mike Krause, AFM, ALC of Hertz Farm Management in Omaha, Nebraska was recognized by ASFMRA, Sygenta, and Ag Professional Magazine as the 2010 Professional Farm Manager of the Year.  Following graduation from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and after receiving a Ranch Management degree from Texas Christian University, Mike began his career in western Nebraska on the family-owned farm/ranch/feedlot near Alliance. Mike transitioned to his farm management career in 1991. He has served at the national level as a member of the Management Education Committee and is currently serving as the District VI Vice President and the Co-chair of the Management Education Committee.

The 2010 Appraisal Professional of the Year was Arthur E. Clapp, ARA, ASA.  Each year this award honors an ASFMRA Accredited Member for their outstanding experience and commitment to excellence within the agricultural appraisal profession, including their industry contributions.  He was raised on a dairy farm in Western Massachusetts and has worked in or with agriculture and rural property for his entire professional career.  Since March 2009, Clapp has detailed from the DOI to the Department of Justice as a forensic appraiser conducting reviews, assisting litigation teams, counseling appraisers, and working with representatives of the Department of Homeland Security (Customs and Border Patrol).  Clapp has also served as the National President of ASFMRA.

The 2010 D. Howard Doane Award was presented to Max W. Evans, AFM, ARA of Farmers National Company in West Des Moines, Iowa.  This award is given annually to a member or non-member who has demonstrated such qualities and outstanding contributions in the field of agriculture with emphasis on farm management and rural appraisal.  Max is a past national president of ASFMRA and holds two designations – the Accredited Farm Manager and the Accredited Rural Appraiser. According to Max, “The Society has truly changed my life. Some of my very best friends are here, some of my very best learning experiences have occurred here, and many of my best memories have come from my experiences in ASFMRA. It is an absolutely amazing organization.”

Carl F. Hertz Distinguished Service in Agriculture Award is presented each year to an individual in appreciation for service to agriculture other than directly in the farm management and rural appraisal professions. The 2010 recipient was Gary Thien, AFM, ARA. Thien owns a farm management, appraisal and consulting business in Council Bluffs, Iowa along with his sons David and Adam.  Since joining the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, he has served on numerous committees and is a past President of the Iowa Chapter.  Nationally he has chaired the Management Education Committee, the Accreditation Committee, has been a District Vice-President and President of the ASFMRA.
 
The ASFMRA Early Career Award recognizes an outstanding early career member, someone who is making outstanding contributions to their local chapter, the ASFMRA and to their local communities during their first 10 years of ASFMRA membership. The recipient of the 2010 ASFMRA Early Career Award was Michael C. Downey, AFM.   Mike graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. Degree in Agribusiness, Farm, and Financial Management, and shortly thereafter joined Hertz Farm Management.  Currently, Mike is a director on the Iowa Chapter ASFMRA Board, and continues to manage a farm management territory with Hertz Farm Management in East Central and Southeast Iowa.    

The Meritorious Service in Communication Award acknowledges an individual, company, or association involved in promoting understanding and goodwill between producers and consumers of agricultural products.  The 2010 recipient of the Meritorious Service in Communications Award was the American Farm Bureau.  

The H. E. “Buck” Stalcup Excellence in Education Award is awarded to individuals who have contributed his or her knowledge and countless hours toward the advancement of the ASFMRA education program.  The 2010 H.E. “Buck” Stalcup Excellence in Education Awards went to Paul Joerger, AFM of Overland Park, Kansas, for management education and James Synatzske, ARA, of Monroe, Louisiana for appraisal education.

Paul Joerger, AFM, graduated from North Dakota State at Fargo with a M.S. in Ag Economics (1983). Joerger has work with First Trust Company of Fargo (US Bank), North Dakota, Centrol of West Fargo, the University of Kentucky; Southern States Cooperative, and the Nobel Foundation. His current position is with Farmers National Co. as Area VP for the South Central Area and resides in Overland Park Kansas.  Paul joined the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers in 1988 and holds the AFM designation.  He has been a member and chairman of several national ASFMRA Committees.

James Synatzske, ARA has been an appraiser for over 33 years, beginning as a staff appraiser for the Texas General Land Office in 1977. He earned his Accredited Rural Appraiser (ARA) designation in 1984 and operated an independent fee appraisal business. In November 2000 he joined the Farm Credit System as Director of Appraisal for AgTexas Farm Credit Services in Stephenville, TX and currently serves as the Chief Appraiser for the Louisiana Land Bank headquartered in Monroe, LA. James has served as the Farm Credit Council’s representative on the Education Council of the Appraisal Foundation Sponsors (ECAFS) in Washington, DC.  He is a graduate of Texas Tech University with a BS Degree in Agricultural Economics/Finance.

The Gold Quill honor is awarded to the author or authors of the most outstanding article published during the year in the Journal of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.  The ASFMRA Editorial Committee presented the 2010 Gold Quill Award to Freddie L. Barnard, Ph.D.; Paul N. Ellinger, Ph.D.; and Christine Wilson, Ph.D. for their article entitled, Measurement Issues in Assessing Farm Profitability through Cash Tax Returns.  

ASFMRA was pleased to congratulate members for their long standing membership.  Receiving the President’s recognition for 65 years of members in ASFMRA was Arthur H. Haist of La Fontaine, Indiana.  Celebrating 50 years of ASFMRA membership were: Carl R. Baldus, Jr., ARA; Paul N. Craig; Jerrold E. Fisher, ARA-Retired; Henry M. Goodyear, Jr., ARA-Retired; William H. Maddocks, ARA-Retired; and Max Evans, AFM, ARA. Recognized for 40 years of ASFMRA membership were: Robert C. Hill, AFM, AAC-Retired; Donald L. Hoover; Peter L. Lowe, ARA-Retired; Gary L. McCool, AFM; Gene W. Meurer, AFM, ARA; James K. Norwood, ARA; A. Wayne Stevenson, AFM-Retired; Duane E. Webb, ARA; James W. Wheyland, ARA, AAC; Bill J. White; Charles C. Williams, AFM, ARA; Richard J. Willsey, ARA-Retired

The 2010-2011 ASFMRA President, Kirk D. Weih, AFM noted “I am excited and proud to be a part of such a great organization. The 2010 Annual Meeting was one of the American Society’s best meetings yet. It was a great honor to recognize so many who have given so much to the Society and the professions we serve.” President Elect Jeff Berg, ARA added “Planning is already underway for the 2011 Annual Meeting to be held in Phoenix, Arizona. We are looking for another great line up of speakers, education, and networking opportunities. Mark your calendars now for October 24-28, 2011 for another great meeting.”
