Global Offset Experts: WWF says renewable energy could meet the globes power needs by 2050.

A recent joint report by conservation group WWF and energy consultancy company Ecofys shows that all but 5% of the world’s energy requirements could be met by renewable sources by 2050.

Feb. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- According to the new report total global energy demand may be 15% lower than 2005 as a result of ambitious energy saving measures even though population, industrial output, freight and travel are expected to increase, Global Offset Experts.

At present, over 80% of global energy is generated from fossil fuels but the report shows that nuclear power, fossil fuels and biomass could possibly be almost entirely replaced by renewable energy by 2050.

For this to become a reality, building heating would have to cut by at least 60% through energy efficiency, extensive use of solar energy and geothermal heat.

Electricity grids would have to be upgraded and smart grids installed and there would need to be a significant move toward the use of electric transport.

"Renewable energy and better grid interconnection with Europe has the potential to meet all of our energy needs in a very sustainable way,” Nick Molho, head of energy policy at WWF-UK told Global Offset Experts sources recently.

The report also indicated that continued financial incentives for renewable energy generation, like feed-in tariffs would also play a key role.

According to the report, consumption of meat in industrialised nations will be halved per person by 2050 and would have increased by 25% elsewhere.

Global Offset Experts understands that the report says that $5,588 billion be saved yearly through energy efficiency and reduced fuel cost in a business-as-usual scenario.

Capital expenditure will have to increase initially to install renewable energy generating capacity, modernize electricity grids and to improve energy efficiency.

This is will have to increase over the next 25 years to around $5 trillion and this investment will begin to pay off by around 2040, when savings begin to outweigh the costs.
