Feb. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Fluorescent lighting has been a workplace standard almost since its invention in the first half of the twentieth century. It produces abundant light at a reasonable price, making it an ideal choice for general business lighting. However, conventional fluorescent lighting falls short as anything more than general-purpose ceiling fixtures. Promolux balanced-spectrum lighting combines the energy efficiency of fluorescent lighting with the specificity of task lighting.

Typical fluorescent lighting emits over half of its radiation in the form of invisible wavelengths of light, particularly ultraviolet and infrared radiation. Although ultraviolet and infrared radiation is invisible to the unaided eye, their effects on food are plain: heat, fading, and moisture loss. While a fluorescent tube at ceiling height is unlikely to have much effect on perishable goods, one that is only inches away from the food it lights will have a dramatic impact on food freshness.

Promolux full-spectrum lighting is designed to stay cooler than conventional fluorescent tubes. Cooler lighting means less spoilage, and less spoilage means more savings. Not only does uniform cold reduce spoilage, it also makes costly cold displays more economical. As refrigeration units no longer have to work to offset heat from conventional lighting, both their operational costs and their failure rates are lowered.

The Secret to Boosting Sales in Grocery Fresh Food Departments
It's no secret that attractive food sells well. Artfully arranged displays maximize the appeal of fresh produce, imported cheeses, and delectable baked goods. But no amount of showcasing can overcome wilted produce, discolored labels, or faded flowers on a wedding cake.

Ultraviolet light from conventional fixtures slowly destroys pigmented phytochemicals in produce and bleaches the ingredients in deli goods, but Promolux lighting is specialized for use in close proximity to food. The phosphor coating on Promolux lighting reduces both ultraviolet and infrared emissions. They keep colors vivid and packages looking new.

Food Retailers Rely on Their Ability to Showcase Product Freshness and Color
Fading and discoloration are readily apparent signs of less than ideal freshness, but moisture loss affects food just as greatly, albeit less visibly. Moisture held within cells is what keeps lettuce crisp, bread fresh, and meat tender and full of flavor. Regular fluorescent lighting robs food of its moisture.

While the effects of moisture loss are obvious with some foods—a cracked cake, a toughened steak—other items don't reveal how stale they've become until shoppers take them home. Unsatisfied buyers are unlikely to become repeat customers. Prevention is better than any cure; low-temperature balanced-spectrum Promolux lamps are designed to protect food and support the merchandising of perishable items.

Traditional fluorescent lighting is fine for ceiling fixtures. Their low-cost, plentiful light works well in any large space with high ceilings. But for fresh food displays, opt for focused, specialized task lighting. Promolux balanced-spectrum lighting not only makes food look its best, it also keeps it at its freshest.
