German World War II survivor reveals how she escaped the Russians in the Winter of 1945

Author recalls grueling trek through Poland as the Third Reich failed

Feb. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Ruth Rathgeber was stranded in Poznan, Poland in January 1945 as the Russians advanced toward Germany. Miraculously, she survived this grim chapter of modern history. She decided to publish her memoir/novel Journey to Peace to set the record straight about what life was really like for ordinary Germans trapped under Hitler’s insane regime. The story is largely autobiographical and is based on the author’s real-life experience as a young German woman working as a reporter in occupied Poland. The story traces the author’s grueling and life-threatening real life journey fleeing Poland in the freezing winter of 1945 to Germany and then eventually to Canada in search of a life without war.
Rathgeber is available for interviews and would welcome the opportunity to talk about her book and discuss the perilous existence of ordinary Germans during and immediately after World War II. She has some incredible stories to tell—from translating BBC broadcasts for the German military to being hauled before the Gestapo for speaking English while socializing at a cafe and more.
