Feb. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Alnico magnets can be made from a variety of materials such as cobalt, nickel, aluminum and sometimes even titanium and copper. A hard and brittle material, Alnico is known for sometimes being difficult to rework. You can have alnico manufactured in a number of shapes such as cylinders, horseshoes, blocks, discs, rings and rods. With high residual inductions and high energies alnico magnets are normally manufactured through sintering or casting. Processes where molten metal alloy is poured into a mold and processed through various heat-treated cycles is known as the casting process. When manufacturing magnets sintering is often used, which is a process used to combine two main materials combined by melting them down until they stick to each other. When it comes to sintering alnico a fine alnico powder is often compacted in a press. The many benefits to alnico magnets include their strength, affordability, ability to maintain their magnetic qualities and resistance to extremely high temperatures. Alnico magnets are excellent choices for industrial and consumer applications.

Ferrite magnets are often made from a chemical compound that contains iron oxide and ceramic. They are made from pressing and sintering mixtures of ceramic and magnetic powders. Sintering is used when manufacturing magnets and it heats two main materials to a point when they stick together. Ferrite magnets are described as being hard and brittle.Although the terms hard and soft are misleading ceramic ferrite magnets are categorized as either being a hard ferrite or a soft ferrite. The terms hard and soft ferrite are misleading because the difference between these two magnets does not lie in the density of the material but instead in the intensity of the magnetic field. The difference between hard and soft ferrite magnets is that hard ferrite magnets need a more intensive magnetic field to de-magnetize. The unique quality of a ceramic magnet is that it can be applied to flexible fabrics, which makes them great for crafts, decorations and use in home, school or work. Ceramic ferrite magnets can be used in many different applications and for numerous uses.

Neodymium, a rare earth magnet, is made from the chemical element neodymium which has an atomic number of 60 and symbol of Nd. Neodymium is present in the ore minerals bastnasite and monazite and is described as a soft, silvery metal that easily tarnishes in the air. The strength and performance in extreme conditions is the reason why neodymium magnets are preferred for certain applications. If you require maximum energy then neodymium magnets are a great choice. Neodymium magnets are considerably stronger than ceramic ferrite or alnico magnets. The advantages to using neodymium magnets and other products made from neodymium are numerous. Although neodymium is strong, affordable, popular and can withstand cold temperatures it also has some cons. Unlike other rare earth magnets, such as samarium-cobalt, neodymium magnets have a low Curie temperature and as a result can't perform in high temperatures, which means that it could lose its magnetism in environments that are too hot. Neodymium performs extremely well in very cold temperatures. Unlike samarium-cobalt, another rare earth magnet, neodymium is less resistant to oxidation which means it is ultimately not as durable and must have a surface treatment applied in order to protect the magnet from being scratched. Since neodymium is brittle and can form cracks due to corrosion manufacturers often apply treatments of tin, gold, nickel or zinc platings or coatings to the surface to protect it. Oxidization and cracking can be minimized by applying a good coating or plating to the neodymium magnet..

A powerful type of magnetic strip is a high energy strip magnet which has a nitrile rubber base. The stored energy in a magnet, otherwise called magnet performance or magnetic energy product is usually measured in megagaussoersteds (MGOe). More powerful than normal flexible magnetic strips, high energy strip magnets come in 1.1 - 1.6 MGOe. Magnetic strips come in many different sizes, shapes, materials and have adhesive backing and can be laminated. Ideal for laminating and punching, flexible magnetic strips can be cut to length, are available in a number of sizes and widths and will stick to any ferrous surface. Magnetic tape can be used for many uses in the office, at work, at school or in your home. Magnetic tape can stick to many surfaces because the back has a magnetic face and the front has an adhesive face. Magnetic tape can be used for a number of different applications because it is so affordable, thin, flexible and versatile.

Named for their rectangular shape, block magnets come in different dimensions and sizes. Most people who think of a magnet think of a block magnet because it is such a popular choice in many different settings, it is not only affordable but also versatile. Block magnets have many uses such as therapeutic, decorative and recreational and this is why they are used in so many different environments. Block magnets are very customizable and are surprisingly affordable and easy to customize for your specific need. The majority of magnet manufactures carry many magnets in stock but you can ask them to make you what you need affordably and quickly if what you want isn't in stock. Having a block magnet customized to your needs can be done for a reasonable price..
