Baxa to Highlight Proven Advantages of Custom Nutrition at Clinical Nutrition Week

Feb. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Baxa Corporation, a leading provider of medical devices and systems that automate pharmacy operations, led an educational session at this week’s Clinical Nutrition Week 2011 (CNW) in Vancouver, British Columbia.  The conference, a global initiative by the American Society of Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), was established to update and inform industry professionals about clinical nutrition.  CNW began on January 29, 2011 at the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre and concludes today.  

Baxa sponsored the exhibitor theatre session, “Establishing a Gold Standard: The Clinical Advantages of Custom Nutrition,” to explore the best clinical practices in parenteral nutrition with a specific focus on the benefits customized parenteral nutrition can have on a patient’s clinical needs.  The session highlighted key advantages of custom nutrition, including the ability to cater to each patient’s specific characteristics, such as weight, age, dietary information and plan of care.

Jennifer Webb, MS, RD, of Coram Infusion Pharmacy and Mary Jansen, RPh, MSHA, clinical pharmacy specialist for Baxa Corporation, led the interactive session yesterday.  Together Webb and Jansen explored key areas of clinical parenteral nutrition, including the clinical advantages of custom nutrition versus premixed and how to determine which patients require individualized parenteral nutrition.

Additional topics discussed were:
•   History of parenteral nutrition and the clinical science behind it;
•   State of today’s pharmacy school curricula;
•   Role of the nutrition team in meeting the patient’s clinical nutrition needs; and
•   How automation equipment and software work together to ensure patient safety and compounding accuracy.
