During 2011, 108 fish farms located in Morelos will be technologically advanced, said the secretary for Agricultural Development of the Mexican state, Bernardo Pastrana Gómez.

The main objective is to develop, strengthen and promote local aquaculture, through an investment of MXN 56 million (USD 4.6 million).

The modernization of the farms will be conducted under Intensive Aquaculture Production Modules (MIPAC), which will incorporate new technologies, develop infrastructure and train workers involved in the sector.

Furthermore, the producers will provide a further MXN 24 million (USD 2 million), bringing the total investment to MXN 80.13 million (USD 6.6 million).

Over the past 10 years, the aquaculture industry in Morelos has recorded a significant growth with investments reaching over MXN 40 million (USD 3.3 million), said Pastrana Gómez.

The official also said he will seek to optimize and meet the needs of growth, stability, development, production and marketing in the aquaculture sector of Morelos, reports El Sol de Cuernavaca.

For their part, many producers in the area recognized the important support given to aquaculture by the Government of Morelos.

This includes Salvador Lugo Barenque, president of the Fish Production System of Ornato, Tirso Quintero Flores, president of the Fish Meat Product System, Raquel Perdomo Malpica, president of the Perla Organization of of Morelos, as well as Margarita Galeana Torres, producer of Ornamental Fish of the State.

Aquaculture in Morelos generates 1,700 jobs in over 400 production units, of which 290 are devoted to ornamental fish and 110 to resources such as tilapia, catfish, trout, lobster and shrimp.

Currently, Morelos is the largest producer of ornamental fish nationally, with a production of 20 million organisms annually.

It also has the only laboratory for producing postlarvae shrimp and a center for collection and sale in the south-east of the state.
