Jan. 31, 2011 - PRLog -- FLOWER MOUND, TX - While we all learn from a very early age how important it is to brush our teeth, most of us do it improperly, says Dr. Jonathan Golab, a Flower Mound dentist.

"Everyone brushes their teeth, but only a minority does it correctly,” Golab says. "By focusing on key brushing methods, overall oral health improvements can be seen."

Brushing too harshly or quickly is common, says the Flower Mound TX dental implants provider. "People don't brush long enough," Golab says. "At least two minutes should be devoted to brushing teeth.

"Some find this challenging initially,' says a Flower Mound Smile makeover dentist (http://www.drgolab.net) Dr. Golab, "but when you focus on two or three teeth at a time, it is very doable." Golab suggests a systematic approach, such as brushing teeth in the same order every time. "It helps for some people to time themselves initially, " he says. "Later on, they can brush more efficiently without a timer."

It is important to use the proper angle, too, he says. Start by holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, just where teeth meet gums.  Then maintain this angle as you gently brush the outer and inner tooth surfaces, two or three at a time. The technique works well to help in removal of plaque and bacteria, he says. A vibrating, tight, circular motion is recommended.

A different approach is best used for the inner surfaces of the front teeth, says the Flower Mound veneers provider (http://www.drgolab.net/blog/). He recommends tiling the brush behind the teeth, and using short, vertical strokes. Only the front half of the brush is used at this stage in the process. The chewing surfaces of teeth are better approached straight on, with brush bristles flush to teeth. A back and forth motion is used, like gentle scrubbing. After brushing your teeth, always brush your tongue.

The right toothbrush counts. "Choose a toothbrush that has soft, nylon bristles to provide gentle contact," he says. "Select one that feels comfortable, and has a head small enough to easily reach each tooth." The Flower Mound dentistry office (http://www.drgolab.net/sep/flower-mound-tx-services-2.htm) encourages patients to take tooth brushing seriously, and enjoy healthier teeth and gums.
