New Market Research Report: South Africa Food & Drink Report Q1 2011

New Food and Beverage research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

Jan. 31, 2011 - PRLog -- The South African consumer has looked in better shape over the past few months. After a particularly challenging H110, a boost from the summer World Cup and healthy momentum thereafter suggest that at least some of the discretion that has characterised spending over the past two years is unwinding. Indeed, Q210 GDP by expenditure data showed private consumption up 4.7% quarter-onquarter (q-o-q). Although the World Cup caveat is a strong one, this was backed up by firm retail sales momentum. According to Statistics South Africa, sales were up 7.8% year-on-year (y-o-y) in July 2010.

Headline Industry Data

* 2010 per capita food consumption = +3.81%; forecast to 2015 = +52.58%
* 2010 beer volume sales = +2.91%; forecast to 2015 = +14.60%
* 2010 mass grocery retail sales = +3.69%; forecast to 2015 = +69.06%

Key Company Trends

SABMiller May Be Lining Up An Acquisition - Despite having been an early frontrunner in terms of M&A (most notable being its acquisition of Miller Brewing for US$5.5bn back in 2002 and the US$7.8bn purchase of Colombia's Bavaria in 2005), SABMiller has been quieter in this domain in recent years. Massive demand growth in EMs means it has managed to keep pace with its peers in terms of revenue growth, while its EM footprint means it has also remained an investor favourite. However, over the past few months the company has been linked with both Foster's beer business and the Brasseries & Glaceries Internationales (BGI) African beer business of the privately owned France- Spending Picking Up

based Castel Group. We believe it is more likely to acquire the latter. In our opinion, closing this deal would make a great deal of sense for SABMiller, with the two main uncertainties arguably concerning the reported valuation placed on BGI, and the timing of any deal.

Wal-Mart Poised To Enter South Africa - In December 2010, it was reported that Wal-Mart has made a formal bid of ZAR148-a-share for a 51% stake in Massmart worth ZAR15.2bn (US$2.1bn), valuing the chain at US$4.1bn. The bid has been unanimously backed by Massmart's board and the majority of its institutional shareholders are expected to vote in its favour. Wal-Mart had initially planned to acquire full control of Massmart, but scaled its bid back.

Key Risks to Outlook

Weak Confidence - With confidence still weak and South Africa's unemployment rate still so high, consumer confidence remains some way off a sustained recovery, despite the near-term boost provided by the World Cup.
