Recently released market study: Poland Commercial Banking Report Q1 2011

Fast Market Research recommends "Poland Commercial Banking Report Q1 2011" from Business Monitor International, now available

Jan. 30, 2011 - PRLog -- With Poland's economy showing increasing signs of improvement, we believe the country's banking  industry will continue to see profitability recover. We expect loan losses to moderate and credit growth to  pick up, while conservative capital positioning should ensure sector stability over the long term.  Poland's banking sector avoided the outright mayhem experienced throughout much of the developed  world during the global financial crisis. We believe the industry remains well positioned to weather any  further potential downturns in the Polish economy, although that is not our core scenario. As the pie chart  below illustrates, Poland's banking sector maintains healthy capital ratios with the vast majority (80.3%)  of banks holding 12.0% or more of assets in Tier 1 capital. These strong balance sheet positions should  ensure that loan losses can be endured through a downturn, as was the case in 2009.    Nevertheless, it should be noted that despite this healthy cushion of capital, the sharp slowdown in  domestic economic activity from H208 onwards hit the banking industry's profitability hard. Polish banks  faced rising non-performing loan ratios and a net interest margin squeeze as a result of accommodative  monetary policy steps taken by the National Bank of Poland (NBP). Their response to such conditions  was to rapidly curtail loan growth and instead plough excess deposits into government debt holdings,  which still accounted for 15.1% of total banking sector assets in April 2010, up from 12.3% in January 2008.    The effect of this reallocation of banking sector assets is shown in the chart above. Growth in credit  extended to households and businesses tumbled throughout 2009, from a consolidated rate of 33.3% yearon-  year (y-o-y) in August 2008 to just 5.3% y-o-y by April 2010. This reflected Polish banks' the  cautious stance towards lending and the reduced overall demand for credit in the economy due to weaker  economic conditions and the collapse in consumer and business confidence.
