Follow on Google News | ‘Mattox for Mayor’ Campaign Kicks Off with Rally, SupportMore than 250 supporters attend event, including former Phoenix mayor, congressman, business leaders
By: Patty Johnson The rally drew area business leaders and legislators, including former Mayor Paul Johnson and former Congressman Matt Salmon, who both chair his campaign. Former Phoenix City Council Members Peggy Bilsten and Tom Milton also attended to show their support. “It’s all about positioning yourself for the future, and that’s what I’m all about,” Mattox told supporters as he described his pilgrimage to Phoenix more than three decades ago to follow “the love of [his] life,” his wife Sherri. He spoke of their promise to each other years ago to “be successful” and said he always found inspiration in her to be the best he could be. While acknowledging the state of the economy and jobs, Mattox focused on what he described as the one common thread relevant to all Phoenix residents: their quality of life. “It’s the economy, but it’s not just about attracting jobs. We want career opportunities and we need the infrastructure— Over the past 10 years on the City Council, Mattox has been instrumental in myriad success stories for the city of Phoenix, including hundreds of millions of dollars being invested in west Phoenix, and the lowest crime rate in 20 years. The majority of Phoenix residents, said Johnson, “are people who the only lobbyist they can afford is the one that they elect.” Salmon continued that sentiment, saying that Mattox is “someone who cares deeply about people a lot more than titles. When he becomes mayor, he’s still going to be Claude. He’s not going to let that title go to his head.” For more information, visit www.mattoxformayor.com.
