Jan. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- 2010 will be remembered a significant year for Namibia's mining sector with the industry recovering the momentum lost the previous year as a result of the global economic downturn. A recovery in international diamond and copper demand -- two of the country's major mined resources -- saw the industry expand by an estimated 26.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) in real terms.

We anticipate conditions to be congenial to further growth, with several firms either reopening previously sidelined projects or expanding their operations. Among the major developments taking place we highlight the decision by copper producer Weatherly International, taken in 2010, to reopen its Otjihase and Matchless mines this year which will allow copper exports to return to and surpass pre-downturn levels. Diamond production is also set to grow on the back of a more favourable global demand outlook.

Meanwhile, BMI looks with some anticipation to the country's uranium mining sector which we believe is still some way from reaching its full potential. Namibia, along with Canada and Australia, is among the states best placed to profit from long-term growth in global nuclear power production, with demand for uranium likely to come from the increased energy demands of major emerging markets such as India. Namibia's uranium deposits, while long-since recognised, are only now beginning to be harnessed with operations set to begin at four new mining projects over the course of our medium-term forecast period (2011-2015), adding considerable capacity to the country's existing Rossing and Langer Heinrich operations. Over the 2010-2015 period, Forsys Metal Corps is expected to open its Valencia project, while Areva SA is expected to begin operations at its Trekkopje mine, Extract Resources is expected to start mining at the Rossing South mine and Bannerman Resources is anticipated to begin extraction at its Etango and Swakop River mine.

Increased state involvement in an industry, which has hitherto been seen to be dominated by foreign firms, can also be seen as a positive development, and is expected to lead to increased competition.

Taking all these factors into account, BMI believes the value of Namibia's mining industry can grow to reach US$1.89bn by 2015, more than double its 2010 value. We equate this expansion to an average y-oy growth of 4.1% between 2011 and 2015, one of the highest in the Sub-Saharan Africa region.

Namibia's ability to capitalise on increased international demand for its resources is testament to its stable operating environment with the country occupying third place in BMI's Africa Business Environment Ratings, behind Botswana and Ghana. A relatively stable political outlook is boosted by the country's well-developed infrastructure and, in particular, freight transport networks. However, the country's relative advantages in these areas continue to be somewhat undermined by ongoing concerns surrounding the cost of doing business as well as relatively high levels of corruption.
