Jan. 27, 2011 - PRLog -- On January 12th, the Coalition for Equitable Water Rates (CEWR) met with over 35 representatives of local Home Owner Associations (HOAs) to update them on the progress of the Canyon Lake Water Service Company (CLWSC) water rate increase protest and to highlight the need for HOAs and individual involvement to continue the challenge. The monetary aspects of the challenge were detailed, with CEWR indicating that it had only 1/3 of the contributions it felt would be required for a serious challenge to CLWSC’s / San Jose Water (SJW) massive rate hike.. The CEWR also encouraged all HOA members and ratepayers of CLWSC to sign up as members of the CEWR on the website, www.cewr.net. Membership to the CEWR will afford ratepayers up to date status information on the challenge and notify them of any upcoming meetings. All participants were asked to encourage individual donations from their members.

The CEWR indicated that to date it has:

   Collected over 2500 protest signatures (over 2 ½ times the number required by the TCEQ) and qualified as the sole negotiating party with CLWSC.
   Hired a water rate analyst and lawyer to consult on the water rate filing and advise on the most effective strategy.
   Created a website for communicating updates to the ratepayers, www.cewr.net.
   Began fundraising efforts to meet the requirements of a possible full challenge with CLWSC
   Conducted initial negotiation discussions with CLWSC. (No settlement was reached.)
   Held a public forum on Dec 15th  to keep ratepayers informed of their progress.
   Participated in a preliminary water rate hearing with a TCEQ Administrative Law Judge presiding. This effectively started a period of discovery both sides on the case. CEWR submitted a list of 33 areas for information and clarification. This discovery period remains open until approximately May 12th of this year.

The CEWR is stressing the need to contact elected officials in order to be heard regarding one’s stance on the rate increases. CEWR’s website was provided as a source for all such contact information and sample letters for local and State officials.

Opportunities for making donations and provision of the latest updates can all be found at www.cewr.net.  The website affords those interested to sign up as CEWR members to get the latest information regarding the water rate challenge or to get answers to any of their questions. Those interested can also call the CEWR feedback line at 830-542-WATR (9287).
