Models Direct: It’s Not Just de la Renta Criticising Michelle Obama’s Fashion Choices

Last week we told you that Oscar de la Renta was at it again, criticising the First Lady’s fashion choices. Well now it seems others agree with him, but Models Direct still think they’re being too harsh.

Jan. 27, 2011 - PRLog -- Ever since de la Renta spoke out about Michelle Obama’s choice of an Alexander McQueen gown, worn to a state dinner with Chinese President Hu Jintao, others have followed suit.

Political writer Bob Colacello recently told Vanity Fair: “I think it was absolutely wrong for her to wear something by a foreign designer, particularly at a dinner for China, with which we have a terrible trade imbalance.

“She really should be promoting American fashion. And I think the dress itself was all wrong, too. It made her look gigantic. She completely overshadowed President Hu, and even President Obama looked small next to her.

“I think she’s trying too hard to be fashion-forward, and that’s not really what a First Lady should be. It’s too bad, because she’s a beautiful woman — and it’s a beautiful dress, but just wrong for the occasion.”

The CFDA have also spoken out, echoing Colacello and de la Renta’s disappointment. A statement issued read: “CFDA believes in promoting American fashion. Our First Lady Michelle Obama has been wonderful at promoting our designers, so we were surprised and a little disappointed not to be represented for this major state dinner.”

Indeed Michelle Obama has been “wonderful” at promoting American designers in the past, and so Models Direct (http://www.modelsdirect.com) think she shouldn’t be criticised too harshly for wearing British on occasion. After all, McQueen is hard to resist even for the best of us!
