Renowned artist helps Yorkshire celebrate International Women’s Day centenary

Jan. 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Organised by InterCulture UK’s Connecting Enterprising Women project, the event takes place at Club LS1, on Tuesday 8 March and aims to help empower, inspire and channel female equality.

2011 sees 100 years of International Women's Day which celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women.

Tess Barnes, who is artist-in-residence at the Royal Institution, in London, will be presenting some of her portraits from her acclaimed Women of Substance exhibition, which features 50 paintings of high-profile females of our times.

The event has attracted a host of high-profile speakers including Professor Susan Daniels of the School of Performance and Cultural Industries at the University of Leeds, and Sally Anne-Greenfield, chief executive of Leeds Community Foundation.

They will be joined by Pamela Healy OBE, chief executive of Yorkshire’s Breast Cancer Care charity the Haven, and its founder Sara Davenport; plus Angelena Fixter, group chief executive of the Avalon Group, in Harrogate.

Angela Everson, the joint chief executive of Halifax’s WomenCentre, will also be there along with Yvette Vaughan Jones, CEO of Visiting Arts, London.

The event has chosen to support the Haven by hosting a special International Women’s Day dinner that will take place on the evening of the conference at the Marriot Hotel, off Boar Lane, Leeds.

Ruth Dass, executive director of InterCulture UK Ltd, said: “We hope that the conference will make the women of the past proud, the women of now inspired and the women of the future envisioned.

“The enterprising women that represent the Yorkshire and Humber region have made great strides in equality, and there is an acceptance globally that there is still a great deal to be achieved for future generations of women.”

David Criddle, of Club LS1, commented: “Our building is one of the most historic in Leeds and 100 years ago was a ‘gentleman only’ club.

“Today, we have a truly diverse group of leaders as members and are are delighted to be hosting such a prestigious event to celebrate 100 years of International Women’s Day.”
