Jan. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- The challenge to integrate higher levels of renewables into the existing energy mix safely and reliably will be addressed during a workshop at the Smart Energy India conference and exhibition this coming Monday, 31 January in New Delhi.  Some of India’s most respected power professionals as well as global metering technology experts are meeting in what is considered the country’s top smart grid forum.  Enabling India to implement the Smart Grid and embrace renewable energy is at the top of the agenda.

Workshop on Role of smart grid in enabling renewable integration
The workshop on “Renewable Energy Integration” is presented by Customized Energy Solutions and will provide the attendees an overview of renewable energy developments using examples from both India and USA, as well as latest trends in efforts to integrate higher levels of renewables through drive towards smarter grids.

One of the workshop leaders, Dr Rahul Walawalkar, Vice President, Emerging Technologies & Markets, Customized Energy Solutions, says:  “With the implementation of state renewables portfolio standards (RPS) and national goals both in India as well as USA for renewable growth, a number of grid operators are anticipating scenarios with greater than 10% of renewable electricity, principally wind, as part of the supply mix.  Due to the variability of wind, the electrical systems operators are concerned with how the influx of new wind generation will change the reliability and operations of the electric grid.”

Will the influx of new wind generation change the reliability of the grid?
According to Dr Walawalkar, system operators around the world are currently working on developing rules that would address any potential system reliability concerns.  He continues:  “recent rise of wind farm power generation and the projections in India has prompted the CERC to come up with grid code amendments that address this issue through accurate forecasting and provision of penalties for significant deviations from forecasts.  So while wind energy is renewable, and emission-free, solutions are needed to maximise the benefits of wind power to the grid and market participants. Various Smart grid technologies including energy storage, demand response and integration of advanced forecasting techniques in grid dispatch are expected to facilitate this integration.”
