According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 80,000 American women underwent breast reconstruction surgery last year after mastectomy, lumpectomy, or to correct other breast deformities. But rebuilding breasts with implants or tissue flap procedures may still leave deficiencies. Breast implants can result in dimpling, wrinkling or visible edges, while more aggressive tissue flap grafting procedures often leave continuing muscle weakness at the donor sites.
According to Dr. Antell, “Now we can remove excess fat from targeted areas of the body, harvest viable natural fat cells, and inject them into the breast in order to enhance breast contour or augment breast size. Since we are using the patient’s own natural fat, the results have the potential to look and feel more natural, and last forever.”
Dr. Antell uses time-tested, traditional liposuction techniques to remove natural fat from targeted areas of the body, such as the abdomen or thighs. “The fat has to be viable in order to use it,” Dr. Antell says. “Unlike laser lipolysis, which destroys fat cells, traditional liposuction is able to remove intact fat cells that can be harvested and then used to augment and enhance breasts. And, of course, liposuction will also help the patient slim down in those areas where the fat is removed.”
Since grafted natural fat must reestablish a blood supply in order to survive, the surgeon must be skilled and experienced in the process in order to preserve as much fat as possible. Dr. Antell precisely injects the harvested fat in narrow ribbons in order to ensure the best outcome. Successfully grafted natural fat can help smooth out wrinkling and dimpling caused by breast implants, while softening visible edges around implants for a smoother, more natural looking appearance. And because there are stem cells within the natural fat, early reports suggest that the injections may also help with scar revision after mastectomy or lumpectomy, and also seem to improve the quality of skin tone after breast radiation treatments. This is currently being explored further. Natural fat can also be injected into the breast for cosmetic purposes in order to improve breast shape or augment breast size.
Until recently, researchers theorized that natural fat injected into breasts might interfere with mammography results. But, studies presented at recent American Society of Plastic Surgeons conferences show that injecting natural fat in the breasts can improve breast shape and size, without interfering with cancer detection through mammography.
Dr. Antell says, “Patients are seeing consistently good results with natural fat transfer to the breasts. Whether you’re looking to enhance breast appearance after reconstructive surgery, correct deficiencies caused by breast implants, or augment your breasts for cosmetic purposes, you should meet with an experienced plastic surgeon to discuss whether natural fat injections can help.”
