Telomere testing a window into a persons' cellular age

New anti-aging telomere testing can direct medical therapies to help people live longer

Jan. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- New Image Clinic is now partnering with SpectraCell labs to provide the only commercially available Telomere testing in the country.  This new technology is a window into a patients’ cellular age.

Telomeres are the end segments of genetic material on each chromosome whose primary function is to prevent DNA breakdown when a cell replicates. As a cell ages, its telomeres become shorter. Eventually, the telomeres become too short to allow cell replication, the cell stops dividing and will ultimately die - a normal biological process.

Age adjusted telomere length is the best method to date to assess biological age using structural analysis of chromosomal change in the telomere. Serial evaluation of telomere length is an indicator of how rapidly one ages relative to a normal population. Anti-aging technology is now a reality and not just hype and buzz words.  There are medical therapies directed at slowing the loss of telomere length that may slow aging and age-related diseases.
