Botox for wrinkles may ease headaches

At Doctors Approach Dermatology, Botox is utilized to combat a wide array of skin related issues and studies show it may ease headaches as a result.

PRLog - Jan. 20, 2011 - LANSING, Mich. -- Lansing, MI- At Doctors Approach Dermatology, Botox is utilized to combat a wide array of skin related issues and studies show it may ease headaches as a result.

Often referred to as a ‘miracle drug’ by physicians, Botulinium Toxin is said to block the chemicals that contribute to muscle pain, a source for migraines.

Allergan Inc. recently received approval by the FDA to use Botox to treat migraines.
Dr. Marcy Street, founder of Doctor’s Approach in Lansing MI, and the nation’s first African American female MOHS surgeon, is treating skin conditions and noticing a relief for migraines.

‘Many of my patients coming in requesting Botox to treat fine lines and wrinkles noticed headaches occurring on the forehead, between their eyes, were eased. While your dermatologist should just treat skin conditions, this study shows that Botox may offer relief of migraine headaches’ she explains.

Two Allergan-funded studies on a combined total of 1,384 patients at 122 study sites cross North America and Europe show the most favorable evidence in terms of efficacy. Compared with injections of salt water, the studies which were published online in March in the journal Cephalagia found that Botox injections reduced the number of days with headaches. In the second study, for example, those treated with Botox had the number of headache days in a 28-day period drop to 11 from 20. Those getting the salt-water treatment saw headache days drop to 13 from 20.

‘While I will continue to solely use Botox to combat wrinkles, I believe people suffering from migraines should know about alternative options’, says Dr. Street.
