SHIFT: Images and Narratives of African Women in Movement

Sauti Yetu Center for African Women Brings the SHIFT exhibition to Brooklyn College

Jan. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- To celebrate the 6th year Anniversary of Sauti Yetu Center for African Women and Brooklyn College, presents Shift: Images and Narratives of African Women in Movement.
Shift reframes the image and popular perception of African Women in the United States, by exploring and following the migration experience for women from a gender perspective and challenging the popular perception and image of African women in the United States. This mixed media exhibit showcases internationally acclaimed artists and New York based representatives of the diversity of the African continent, hailing from Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, and Egypt.

The images and artwork displayed in the Shift exhibit

offers a window into the lived experiences of African immigrant women in all their complexity: shifting, challenging and always negotiating. Despite the often negative and one-dimensional

portrayals of African women in Western media and popular culture, Shifts delivers a multilayered, and gendered look into the process and impact of migration, distance and home from

African women’s perspective.

The Shift exhibition can be seen at the Brooklyn College Student Center, in the Maroon Room, located on Campus Road and East 27th Street, Brooklyn, New York.
