Jan. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- Following the recent news of the government’s proposed plans to enforce minimum pricing on the sale of alcohol across England and Wales; the UK’s leading discount website conducted a flash poll in order to gauge public opinion to the news.

Conducted by www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, the study asked 802 members of the British public aged 18 and over what their reactions were to the proposed plans.

When asked, “What do you think of the proposed Government plans to impose minimum pricing on alcohol?” 67% of respondents stated that they ‘supported’ the plans. Just 16% admitted that they were ‘against’ them, whilst 17% explained that they were ‘unsure.’

Those who supported the imposed plans were asked to explain why they did so. The majority, 46%, explained they were in favour of minimum pricing on alcohol as they believed it would aid the problem of binge drinking; whereas one in five, 22%, believed it would help curb underage drinking.

When also asked, “Would you be concerned with having to possibly pay more for alcohol, should the plans be enforced?” 57% of respondents answered “no.”

Of those who did not support the plans, 71% explained that they were not in favour of the proposed minimum pricing, as they wanted to purchase alcohol at the cheapest price possible.

Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, commented on the findings:

“With the proposed plans on minimum alcohol pricing making the headlines, we wanted to look into how the public feel about the issue, conducting a flash poll in order to do so. We found that the majority of those we polled support the plans, most notably as a means of tackling problems with binge and underage – drinking.”

He continued:

“Although the minimum pricing isn’t set to make a huge difference with these problems, it is certainly a step in the right direction. Rather than generating hostility amongst the British public, as announcements of possible price rises often do; it seems that the plans would be very much welcomed by the majority.”
