Jan. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- New research from the UK’s leading discount website has revealed that Wii Fit is the most popular console game for those over the age of 60; shortly followed by the Nintendo DS title Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box. Furthermore, the research also found that half of over 60’s think that they are better than younger people at gaming.

The research, conducted by the UK’s leading discount site http://www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, polled 1,104 gamers over the age of 60. The site wanted to investigate the relationship between Britons over the age of 60 who take part in gaming, and the games they like to play.

Respondents to the study were asked to choose, from a multiple choice of answers, what their favourite games to play were. The top 10 most popular titles were as follows:

1.       Wii Fit- 63%

2.       Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box- 59%

3.       Just Dance 2 – 58%

4.       Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training: How old is your brain? – 56%

5.       Fifa 11 – 53%

6.       EA Sports Active 2 – 50%

7.       Mario Kart – 47%

8.       Guitar Hero – 43%

9.       Singstar – 39%

10.   Resident Evil 5 - 36%

Respondents to the study were asked to state what factors they looked for most, when choosing a game to play. Just under a third, 32%, explained that they looked for a video game that would keep them ‘physically active;’ whilst 24% preferred games that ‘stimulated them mentally.’ The majority, 37%, explained that they simply looked for games to ‘entertain’ them.

Furthermore, respondents were also asked to gauge their video gaming skill, by being asked whether or not they thought they were better at gaming than younger generations. Just under half, 48%, of the ‘grandgamers’ who took part in the study believed that they were more skilful than their younger gaming counterparts.

Mark Pearson, chairman of http://www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk commented on the findings:

“We’ve conducted extensive research into ‘Grandgamers’ and the trend seems to be that the older generation prefer games that keep you active, both mentally and physically. The Wii Fit proved to be the most popular game with the over 60s, showing that these types of games can be enjoyed by all ages.”

He continued;

“I think that it is becoming very clear that gaming isn’t just for the younger generation anymore, with manufacturers are also taking note, ensuring that games are suitable for gamers all ages. “Grandgamers” have certainly grown in numbers over recent years, particularly enjoying the benefits that mentally and physically stimulating games have to offer.”
