With these events, we can support even more organizations that are making a big difference in sustainability, renewable energy and the climate crisis. We’re also very excited because we're giving participants, or Climate Riders, the option to choose which organization they want to support with their fundraising. This will rally a lot of energetic people to raise awareness for the overall cause, while having the chance to impact projects to which they are most dedicated.” The new 2011 events will raise funds for a collection of hardworking non-profits, including Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (Washington, D.C.), Green America (Washington, D.C.), 1Sky (Washington, D.C.), 350.org (San Francisco, Calif.), 1% For the Planet (Waitsfield, VT. ), Transportation Alternatives (New York, N.Y.), Washington Area Bicyclist Association (Washington, D.C.), San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (San Francisco, Calif.), and Climate Counts (Manchester, N.H.). “Bikes are about the best symbol we have on this planet,” said Bill McKibben of 350.org, one of the new beneficiaries for 2011. “They're universally used by rich and poor around the world, they're a big part of the solution to the climate crisis, and bikes are just plain fun. At 350.org we're fighting to raise awareness and build a global movement around climate change, so there couldn't be a better fit for us than Climate Ride, with its strong sense of hope and possibility.” Full carbon offsets for the participants, hybrid support vehicles, and low-waste catering are a few of the innovative measures that Climate Ride has successful implemented. The ride includes a cycling jersey, accommodations, luggage transfer, road support, meals, bike mechanics, expert guides and the nightly expert speaker series. Each participant pays a registration fee of $75 and then raises at least $2,400 to participate in either ride.
