Leslie Nielsen's Movie Airplane! Selected For National Preservation

Jan. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Each year since 1989, the United States Library of Congress has selected 25 films for preservation.  Under the United States Government’s National Film Preservation Act, works are selected for their enduring significance to American culture, not for their excellence.

"The National Film Registry is a reminder to the nation that the preservation of our cinematic creativity must be a priority, because about half of the films produced before 1950 and as much as 90 percent of those made before 1920 have been lost to future generations," said James H. Billington, Librarian of Congress.

More than 2,100 films were nominated in 2010 for preservation.  In addition to "Airplane!", the following other 24 films were selected:

2.   The Bargain
3.   Cry of Jazz
4.   Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB
5.   The Empire Strikes Back
6.   The Exorcist
7.   The Front Page
8.   Grey Gardens
9.   I Am Joaquin
10.   It’s a Gift
11.   Let There Be Light
12.   Lonesome
13.   Make Way For Tomorrow
14.   Malcolm X
15.   McCabe & Mrs. Miller
16.   Newark Athlete
17.   Our Lady of the Sphere
18.   The Pink Panther
19.   Preservation of the Sign Language
20.   Saturday Night Fever
21.   Study of a River
22.   Tarantella
23.   A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
24.   A Trip Down Market Street

Original copies of each of these films will be preserved in cold-storage vaults at the Packard Campus of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Virginia.
