The Vintage Car Rally in Sitges was born in 1959 thanks to an initiative to promote the tourism in Sitges. There was a need to start social events during the winter months. On February the 8th 1959 the first race was held with 23 cars. The race was so popular that was held continuously until today. Since 1988 it's decided to change the date of the race to March. Because in February there's also Carnival in Sitges. The Vintage Car Rally is nowadays one of the most important events in Sitges during the winter. The start is on Plaza San Jaume de Barcelona. Hundreds of people are attending the event to admire the authentic vehicles. Not only Spanish people are attending the race, but there are participants from all over the World, including United States and United Kingdom. 50 years ago only 23 participants were attending the race, but nowadays this number increased to over 80. Some of the cars are museum pieces that roll back for a few hours without complexes and face the challenge. The Barcelona-Sitges rally is not only a test of strength for cars. All the participants dress according to the time of the build of the car as they go. The winner of the race will get the so called Grand Prize for Elegance. The prices are provided by the government. ) The upcomming race is on the first Sunday of March. The vintage cars will drive from Plaza de San Jaume in Barcelona, along the old seaside road, to Sitges. The route is an old one used for many eras along the Coast of Garraf. A lot of drivers will stop on their way at the Marina for having lunch. Most of the drivers wear classic outfits. Sitges is a small Spanish town about 35 kilometers southwest of Barcelona. Other famous events in Sitges are the yearly Film Festival and the Carnival. The economy of Sitges is mainly based on tourism and culture. As the race starts in Barcelona you might want stay in Barcelona. If you'd like to watch the old vehicles you can go to Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona the day before the race. You could attend the start on Sunday at Plaza de San Jaume and take the train to Sitges to see the finish. As it's about old cars the winner of the race depends more upon the car itself than the time taken to cover the distance, with extra points awarded for dressing up in the appropiate vintage attire.
