Cancerblock, the first ever radiation prevention application for handheld devices, was introduced two weeks ago for the Android operating system. Since its release, the app has gained popularity among users concerned with the effects of cell phone radiation. The Cancerblock developers have taken a stance on the increasingly debated issue of cell phone radiation by raising awareness, offering tools for prevention, and funding research. It is the developers’ belief that consumers today should have access to a product that lowers radiation levels from handheld devices and places a spotlight on the health issues associated with the extended use of these devices. Ten percent of profits from the paid version of Cancerblock are donated to cancer research.

Between 2000 and 2011, there have been vast documented increases in mobile device use among all users. Due to this redefinition of average connection times, research on handheld radiation emission and its effects on the human body is inconclusive. But as the nonprofit watchdog organization Environmental Working Group (EWG) has recently stated: “studies find significantly higher risks for brain and salivary gland tumors among people who have used cell phones for 10 years or longer”(http://www.ewg.org/cellphone-radiation).  It is for this reason the World Health Organization and other research bodies have joined the Environmental Working Group in recommending that users take preventative measures to limit their exposure to all handheld radiation sources. By acting on these findings, Cancerblock is writing the first chapter in cell phone radiation prevention.

Currently there are two versions of Cancerblock: a free app and a paid app, both for the android operating system. Cancerblock’s main function is to limit exposure to radiation energy from handheld devices. The application also delivers significantly improved battery performance. Once a schedule is selected by the application’s user, Cancerblock power cycles all four cell phone radiation energy sources—antenna, Wi-Fi, aGPS and Bluetooth— limiting exposure to both the known and unknown side effects of extended cell phone use. With a default schedule of 15 minutes off and 1 minute on, Cancerblock can reduce radiation exposure by 9,408 minutes in one week or a total reduction of 93.33%! The application features a simple interface that allows users to customize the application to their schedule.

When asked about the reasons for Cancerblock’s development, the Cancerblock team said the following:

“People are are using cell phones in ways that differ from even five or ten years ago. We are providing a service for individuals who have concerns about the health risks associated with their unprecedented exposure to radiation emitting devices. Instead of leaving your phone on continuously, right next to your body, the Cancerblock Team imagines that people could use Cancerblock and reduce their exposure when sleeping, working at the office, in a theater, out at dinner with friends, or in the classroom.”

“We’ve created an application that limits exposure to potentially harmful cell phone radiation.  With a programmable cycle time of 15 minutes off and 1 minute on, it allows for a 93% reduction in exposure.”

“We saw that handheld users will continue to use their smart phones just as much if not more as time moves on. This was our call to action. Cancerblock is a more effective product than any of the typical covers, deflectors, and diffusers that currently exist because Cancerblock addresses the source of handheld radiation emissions...This is the beginning of Cancerblock, a product and company that is addressing handheld radiation emissions, and we are proud to be the first product on the market that allows for significant radiation reductions via an application.”

Wireless technology is and will continue to be extremely important for society. It is a business that will bring about many possibilities that are hard to fathom today.  Cancerblock allows users to reap the benefits of this technology while significantly reducing the health risks of the 4 billion cellphone users in the world today.
