Airtight storage containers have long been used in kitchens, but most homemakers didn't know that the containers could help save them money while providing their families with healthier meals.

Jan. 16, 2011 - PRLog -- Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom –  Some people believe that healthy eating is expensive. Since it involves eating fresh fruit and vegetables, they think that when you eat healthy you end up spending more money because you have to go to the grocery store more often and go for leaner higher grade proteins, which are known to be more expensive.(http://www.airtightstoragecontainers.net)
Now, a study done by Consumer Reports has shown that people can both stay healthy and save money. All they have to do is use airtight storage containers! Most modern kitchens already have airtight containers. They are often used for packaging left overs. What many don't realize, however, is that almost all types of uncooked food can be stored in airtight containers. These containers help preserve the food and keep it fresh for longer than its expected time period, and when you can store food for longer you can save money as well as the time you spend taking a trip to your local supermarket.
The secret to money saving lies in knowing how to put the containers to their best use. Fresh fruit and vegetables are often stored in perforated plastic bags and kept in the fruit and vegetable containers of refrigerators. Some foods do very well with this. For example, cabbage can last up to two weeks when stored this way. However, fresh fruit and vegetables (and you really have to make sure they're fresh) can be stored in airtight containers for longer than that. Fruit can be peeled or sliced and then stored in airtight containers. Vegetables can be chopped up and stored as well. Doing this lengthens the time you have before needing to go back to the store. Not to mention the fact that you get the most out of the money you spend.
Another trick advised by Consumer Reports is to buy canned fruit and vegetables, which will already last for some time since they already come in airtight containers. Canned pumpkin and canned tomatoes are incredibly healthy, and are easy to keep! Pop corn kernels can also be stored in airtight food containers, which will help keep them from drying out.
When it comes to proteins, shoppers are encouraged to invest in beans. Black beans, for example, can last for years in an airtight container. Plus, they're a great source of protein! When it comes to fish, buying frozen fish is a good alternative to fresh, and it will last for about a year in your freezer. Meats can be wrapped in foil (to prevent freezer burn) and then stored in an airtight container and it will also last as long as fish.
With food storing secrets like these, one can stock up whenever groceries and supermarkets have big sales on certain items and not have to worry about it going bad. Of course, expiration dates on the labels should always be checked.
