Kuwait Commercial Banking Report Q1 2011: New research report available at Fast Market Research

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 16, 2011 - Kuwait's banks are largely stable and well capitalised, but dangers are lurking. In particular, we highlight the risks from further defaults by investment companies (something we have been warning about for over a year) and, more generally, from a second round of global recession and lower oil prices. Political interference could also affect lending practices and the quality of assets on balance sheets.    Despite the strong oil price climate and apparent global economic recovery, Kuwaiti banks remain deeply scarred by the global financial crisis. This quarter 2e reiterate our two long held views. First, that there will be further bad news from the investment company sector, undermining asset quality for banks and  leading to further write-downs for loans. Second, the lending and growth rates achieved over 2006 and 2007 will not be resumed within our forecast period to 2014. We anticipate a number of challenges for  banks over the next year or so.    Global Environment Still Not Helping    Sentiment among lenders worldwide remains very subdued despite the apparent recovery. The volatility of financial markets illustrates the ongoing risk aversion among investors, as do bank lending rates. Aside from the ongoing defaults on existing loans, banks are also worried about growth prospects for potential borrowers more generally, amid a shaky global recovery. Kuwait is no exception. Its stock market is still in the doldrums and although there has been one bond issue since our last update (KIPCO's US$500mn offering) there has been little else in the way of corporate finance activity. Moreover, KIPCO had to pay for this privilege and the yield on its 10-year bond was an expensive 9.5%.
