New Market Research Report: Bahrain Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report Q1 2011

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 15, 2011 - In Q111, we find Bahrain moved down two places to occupy seventh position out of the 19 regional markets surveyed in the Middle East and Africa region. This adjustment now sees Bahrain placed below Kuwait and above Lebanon. Bahrain's pharmaceutical rating is 52.0, which is considerably above the average of 46.4 for the region. In a global context, we see Bahrain occupy 44th position in BMI's 83 market-strong pharmaceutical universe. Although the potential returns from the market are constrained by the island's population of under 1mn, the low-risk economic and political climate and strong pharmaceutical-specific regulatory framework mean that Bahrain is one of the region's most attractive markets in terms of the 'risks to realisation of returns' category. BMI therefore forecasts that sales of prescription drugs and over-the-counter (OTC) medications are expected to grow from US$146mn in 2009 to US$156mn in 2019, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.6%.

Bahrain's Minister of Health, Dr Faisal Al Hamer has pledged that several new government hospitals will be built in order to meet the needs of a growing population. The government has acknowledged that a new hospital is now required for the inhabitants of A'ali, Isa Town and Riffa, while another is also needed for people living in Jaw and Askar. The Minister has also announced plans to expand the provision of primary healthcare in the country. At present, there are 23 health centres in Bahrain, a number which will be increased to 28 by the beginning of 2011.

In response to the deaths of 23 sickle cell patients at the Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain's Ministry of Health announced that work on a new 90-bed haematology centre at the medical complex is to be initiated. Although the four-storey facility will be designed to treat all patients with blood diseases, the new centre will be of particular use to those suffering from sickle cell disease. The facility, which costs BHD2.5mn (US$6.6mn), will house an accident and emergency department, an out-patient department and a ward each for men, women and children respectively. The anticipated completion date for the new treatment centre is the middle of 2012.

In 2009, Bahrain spent more than BHD50mn (US$132.8mn) in terms of pharmaceutical expenditure. According to the Head of the Ministry of Health's drug control directorate, the government had initially set aside BHD25m (US$66.4mn) towards the cost of purchasing medications. However, a further BHD5m (US$13.2mn) was subsequently required as a result of the swine flu outbreak. The figure was further boosted by an additional BHD25m (US$66.4mn), which was spent by the private sector on the procurement of pharmaceuticals. Factors such as population growth, rising costs of medicines and imports, as well as greater consumption are attributed to the increase in pharmaceutical expenditure in 2009. In 2008, pharmaceutical expenditure by both the private and the public sectors amounted to approximately BHD45mn (US$119.5mn).
