Log Homes: Intrinsic to American Life

Of the many icons of American culture, the log home is one of the few that still has a role in modern living.

Jan. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom –  The first settlers who came to the United States brought with them their knowledge of making simple houses out of trees. More than just providing these first families and people with protection and shelter, these sturdy one-story structures played a huge part in the building blocks of the nation.(http://www.smallloghomes.org)
From witnessing the birth of presidents to helping people make a comfortable living on the new frontier, the log cabin has played many important roles in the early history of the country. Surprisingly, they continue to play significant roles in modern times. In fact many old cabins can still be seen today, either because they were preserved by historical societies or foundations or because they have developed more modern uses.
One example of preservation is of the Koester Log Cabin in Illinois, which is dated to around 1832, meaning it was built around the time of a historic battle in the area. The Koesters just recently donated to the Apple River For Foundation, an organization known to help preserve and protect log homes. The now two-story cabin will be made a single-story again to bring it back to its original configurations, and it will be moved to Apple River Fort.
In terms of a more modern role, on the other hand, the number of log cabin manufacturers in northern America and Europe are a testament to how significant these types of homes continue to be. In fact, having a log home has become a symbol of wealth. Apart from that, the increasing popularity of log home or log cabin resorts as vacation spots furthers the cultural significance of what is probably the simplest of buildings. These modern homes are different from their predecessors, however, having many modern amenities or luxuries that the very first log homes did not.
The fact that the love for log homes has stood the test of time is proof that it is really part and parcel of American culture. The small differences in the architectural design of historic log homes tell us the story of a nation, of the progress that was made year after year in the centuries before us. When thought of this way, it is easy to understand why log homes are important historically, and perhaps not too surprising to see that they continue to be significant in everyday living. After all, no matter how modern current log cabin interiors may become, their exterior design is reminiscent of an older way of life, one that fought to proudly standing where it is.
