Jan. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- NEWBURY PARK, CALIF.--The Miller Family YMCA in Newbury Park is offering new fitness classes for youth and teens. Enrollment is on a monthly basis.

Splash Ball is a beginning water polo class for ages 5 to 10. Participants meet two days a week at the Y's indoor heated swimming pool. They will develop basic water polo skills, learn the rules of the game and teamwork. Children stand instead of swim while playing.

Strong Kids YMCA Triathlon Team is for kids ages 7 to 16. The team meets three to six days a week. The only requirement for participation is motivation. Kids work on skills specific to swimming, biking, running and conditioning. In addition, participants will learn about nutrition, discipline and goal setting.

"Kids in each of these programs will have fun, get in shape and make new friends while learning about the Y's core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility," says Veronica Rodarte, Miller Y program director.

Also underway is Model United Nations for sixth to eighth graders. In this 5-month program that meets weekly at the Miller Y, students step into the shoes of UN ambassadors of countries from around the world. They give speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries and resolve conflicts. "The skills they use by participating in Model UN will help them in school and eventually as adults," says Rodarte. "It gives participants a world perspective that others their age might not have." Anyone interested should attend the January 26 meeting at the Miller Y.

The Miller Family YMCA is at 320 Via Las Brisas in Newbury Park). For more information on these and other youth activities, contact Veronica Rodarte at 805-480-0309, vrodarte@millerymca.org.
