Jan. 13, 2011 - PRLog -- It is estimated that by the time today's learners reach the age of 38, they will have had 14 different jobs.  So if businesses want to survive the current belt tightening economic climate and come out stronger the other side, it is vital that they recognise the need to nurture their talent and motivate their workforce.  If they don't, they may well lose them to an employer who will!!

Personnel & Care Bank (PCB) have been supplying staff for the Social Care, Social Housing and Child Care sectors since 1986, and are great believers in keeping their staff engaged, happy and motivated. So it is no coincidence that their work ethic has been rewarded for the second time in three years when they achieved 1* status under Best Companies – www.bestcompanies.co.uk – in 2007 and 2* in 2010.

PCB's culture is one of like-minded beliefs and values, with a flat structure, so everybody can voice their opinions.  MD Janine Desmond uses every opportunity to interact with her staff and her open door policy means that she can keep abreast of developing issues and sort them before they become a problem.

There is a very high incidence of stress in social care sectors and to ensure that their people maintains a healthy work/life balance, PCB nominates an annual 'fun budget' that can be spent on all types of activities.  In 2010 £10,000 was paid out to fund over 100 fun activities across the company.

PCB also actively engages in charity fund raising.  Each year every member of staff is invited to nominate a charity to support, and a post-dated cheque for £10,000 is presented to the nominated charity.  Then everybody works together devising programmes of fund-raising events to reach their target.  At the end of the year when they have raised the promised amount, a real cheque is substituted and presented to the chosen charity.

Janine commented, "The whole company look forward to raising funds for the annual charity.  Everybody works together to achieve the target amount and that is what our culture is based upon.  People enjoy working for PCB and this is reflected in low staff turnover. It's good for PCB and our clients’ benefits from continuity of skills, so everybody wins."

This year PCB has gone even further.  Two charities, National Association for Children of Alcoholics and Diabetes UK proved equally popular, so PCB presented each nominee with post-dated cheques for £7,500 for their special charity.  Let the fundraising begin!
