Coal Crisis For China As Demand Will Outstrip Supply

Jan. 12, 2011 - PRLog -- Roughly one billion tons of that coal is consumed in China’s industrial boiler market which on average operates at a mere 60% combustion efficiency. 40% goes up the smokestack as waste and pollution. The coal used in IBs in China is almost always ‘run-of-mine’ raw coal. It is not even size graded and not washed. Ash content is high, as much as 20%, with values to 30% being common.  

Much of China's IB coal  is the type prone to swelling while burning. Coal which swells excessively can forms sticky masses on the traveling grate boilers, which adhere together and prevent the free flow of combustion air. These factors all contribute towards low efficiency performance from Chinese IBs.

Combustion systems of Chinese IBs are usually low quality. Chain grate  and traveling grate combustion grates are usually lower than 60%.

Since IB's in China run on raw coal, burnt on low quality combustion grates results in poor boiler efficiencies. Even on relatively well operated and well maintained traveling grate boilers, combustion efficiencies are typically only 75%.

Smaller IBs, using chain and reciprocating grates, are reported to have boiler efficiencies below 50%. The Chinese national stock of 1,000,000 IBs waste significant amounts of coal
