Art’s Birthday is an international event and 2011 marks art’s 1,000,048th birthday.
The idea of celebrating 17 January as Art’s Birthday was proposed by sometime Fluxus artist Robert Filliou in 1963, and artist groups around the world now host an array of events to mark the occasion.
Party goers in Swansea will be joined at 1pm by Dr. George Nash, archaeologist and specialist in prehistoric and contemporary art, who will discuss the birth of art, its earliest manifestations in Wales and how modern graffiti might hold a key to understanding prehistoric art.
Artist Steven Paige will also be joining the celebrations from 2pm to 5pm, and asking audiences to get involved by facilitating the production of a unique magazine for all attendees of the event. The magazine will be customised and given away as a free birthday goody bag to all those attending.
Art’s Birthday Swansea organiser, Barnaby Dicker, said, "Although the occasion is always Art's Birthday, each year's celebration has a different form and emphasis and the events are shaped by everyone who comes and gets involved.”
Fern Thomas from Swansea artists group Supersaurus said, “It is a great opportunity for artists to come together to celebrate the birth of art in anyway they see fit. The Art’s Birthday events embrace the ethos and fun of Fluxus whilst posing the important question of ‘What is art?’ or ‘What can art be?’”
This year will see the exciting addition of the Arts Birthday Online Radio Station with live recordings of events, discussions and selected music available to download as podcasts from Swansea’s Art’s Birthday website.
