New Method Wellness addiction treatment center announces launch of neurofeedback program

Jan. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- Orange County, CA – New Method Wellness, a premier drug and alcohol abuse treatment center located in Southern California, today announced that it has further expanded its evidence-based services by adding a neurofeedback component to its comprehensive treatment program.

Long-term studies demonstrate that neurofeedback raises abstinence rates substantially.  In a UCLA study published in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse in 2005, 121 volunteers undergoing an inpatient addiction treatment program were randomly assigned to a neurofeedback or control group. Subjects in the neurofeedback group received 40-50 sessions, and the control group received additional time in treatment. Of the subjects receiving neurofeedback, 77 percent were abstinent at 12 months, compared to 44 percent of the controls. This study has also been successfully replicated by other research teams.

Neurofeedback helps patients to develop increased mind-body awareness, and strengthens the brain’s ability to routinely produce brainwaves in healthy ranges.  Clark Burlew, clinical director of New Method Wellness, explains that neurofeedback uses sound and visual frequencies to correct areas of either too much or too little arousal in brain activity.  He further says, “neurofeedback helps reframe feelings that would normally arise during times of stress.  We re-train the brainwaves to modulate at frequencies that are more consistent with calm and a non-stressed state of mind and body…where our patients once found a craving, they now find peace.”
