Big Brothers Big Sisters celebrates National Mentoring Month in January
2011 marks the tenth anniversary for National Mentoring Month nationwide

WINCHESTER, VA (January 10, 2011) – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester, Frederick and Clarke Counties (BBBS) is recognizing their volunteers and bringing awareness to its community during January, National Mentoring Month (NMM).  During each week of January, BBBS will celebrate mentoring through private and public events encouraging others to remember their own mentors and the impact of their experiences.  NMM was created by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR, an organization that promotes, advocates, and is a resource for mentors and mentoring initiatives worldwide.

When looking at how to kick of the New Year, NMM aligns with the mission of BBBS and complements their organizational goals. BBBS is hosting a Facebook campaign encouraging visitors to share a story about their own mentor. Visitors can reach their Facebook page by searching Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester-Frederick-Clarke-Counties or by this direct link: http://www.facebook.com/search.php?q=bbbs+winchester+fred...  By asking the community to respond to the Facebook campaign, perhaps they will consider how a mentor may have impacted their own lives and be inspired to reach out in a similar way.

BBBS provides the opportunity for area children to receive the gift of a mentor. The impact of a ‘match’ through their program is life-long. “When a volunteer becomes a ‘big’ in our program, they are giving a ‘little’, a local child, something to look forward to, someone to look up to, and the gift of needed attention and guidance. They really make an impact,” says Juli Ferrell, Executive Director of BBBS.

The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester, Frederick & Clarke Counties is to help children at risk reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring. The vision for 2011 is to serve more than 100 disadvantaged children who have the highest risk factors in Winchester City, Frederick & Clarke Counties by providing mentoring relationships thereby contributing to better schools, brighter futures and stronger communities.
