The leap from high school to college produces many challenges, not the least of which is time management. Due to the nature of college scheduling, freshmen perceive that they suddenly have a load of free time on their hands. A better word than "free" is "unstructured". In a flash, students go from sitting in school from 8 AM to 2 PM to having two or three classes a day, perhaps with hours in between.

Yes, there is suddenly a lot of "unstructured" time, but it is hardly "free". Students who don't have a plan often fritter it away, severely under-estimating the academic demands of college. Here are some simple time management suggestions you can start implementing on day one of college to ensure getting off to the best possible start.

o In the beginning of August, before they sell out, buy an "Academic Monthly/Weekly Planner". The monthly view gives you the long-term picture, while the weekly view tells you what you need to accomplish in the short-term.

o Program your study time in advance. Don't make the mistake of just thinking it's going to happen. Plan study times when you are most alert. Get Internet #1 - Time Management Strategies For Students @ http://timecure01.webs.com and find out how you can Maximize Your Time!

o Get in the habit of completing all work in the college library where the atmosphere is conducive to homework and studying, and librarians are nearby if you need assistance.

o If you don't care to study in the library, find a distraction-free environment and use it consistently. The idea is to know you are there to "work" the minute you enter that room.

o Cut back job hours as much as possible. Not having to work during college is ideal. You can make up the time over long summer and winter breaks.

o If you must work when school is in session, plan your work hours around school, not vice versa.

o Try to find a job where you have some "down" time to get work done, such as babysitting, working in a movie theater, or clerking in a small retail store. A bonus would be to also have a small, isolated room in the back to which you can retreat.

o Break up large long-term assignments up into smaller tasks and program each step on your calendar. All of a sudden, the project will seen less daunting.

o Allow all more time for long-term assignments than you think you will need. This allows for possible illness, emergencies, etc. Get Internet #1 - Time Management Strategies For Students @ http://timecure01.webs.com and find out how you can Maximize Your Time!
