New Market Research Report: Slovakia Power Report Q1 2011

New Energy market report from Business Monitor International: "Slovakia Power Report Q1 2011"

Jan. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- BMI forecasts that Slovakia will account for 1.08% of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) regional power generation by 2015. The country has gone from being a net exporter of electricity, to becoming a net importer, following the shutdown of the nuclear reactors. CEE power generation in 2010 is expected to come in at 2,581 terawatt hours (TWh), representing a recovery of 2.3% from the previous year. We forecast an increase in regional generation to 3,023TWh by 2015, representing a rise of 17.1% during 2010-2015.

CEE thermal power generation in 2010 will stand at around 1,284TWh, accounting for 49.7% of the total electricity supplied in the region. Our forecast for 2015 is 1,449TWh, implying 12.8% growth that reduces the market share of thermal generation to 47.9% - thanks to environmental concerns promoting renewables, hydro-electricity and nuclear generation. Slovakia's thermal generation in 2010 is an estimated 7.2TWh, or 0.56% of the regional total. By 2015, Slovakia is expected to account for 0.51% of thermal generation.

Gas was the dominant fuel in Slovakia in 2010, accounting for an estimated 29.7% of primary energy demand (PED). Gas was followed by oil at 22.8%, coal at 21.7%, nuclear at 18.9% and hydro weighing in with 6.1% of PED. Regional energy demand is forecast to reach 1,518mn toe by 2015, representing 17.00% growth over the period 2010-2015. Slovakia's estimated 2010 market share of 1.33% is set to rise to 1.34% by 2015. Over 2010, it is estimated that Slovakia will have accounted for 4.14% of regional nuclear energy consumption, with a forecast market share of 3.92% by 2015.

Slovakia now holds sixth place in BMI's updated Power Business Environment Ratings, placing just above Hungary. It probably lacks the ability to challenge Romania, which lies above it, but may be able to keep Hungary and Ukraine at bay. The current score reflects the modest size of the country's electricity market and infrastructure, a low level of population growth, plus its high level of import dependence. Country risk factors also offset the country's industry scores to some extent.

BMI now expects Slovak real GDP growth to average 3.7% per annum between 2010 and 2015, with an assumed 2011 increase of 3.5%. Slovakia's population is expected to rise from 5.4mn to 5.5mn by the end of the period, and GDP per capita and electricity consumption per capita are forecast to increase by 17% and 21% respectively. The country's power consumption is expected to increase from an estimated 24.6TWh in 2010, to 29.9TWh by the end of the forecast period. After power industry usage and system losses, we see an estimated net shortfall of up to 2.1TWh during the period, assuming 3.8% average annual growth in generation during 2010-2015.

We are forecasting an increase in Slovakian electricity generation of 47.2% between 2010 and 2020, which is above average for the CEE region. This equates to 21.4% over the 2015-2020 period, up from 21.2% in 2010-2015. PED growth is set to ease from 17.6% in 2010-2015 to 17.4% in 2015-2020, representing 38.1% over the entire forecast period. An increase of 55% in hydro-power use during 2010- 2020 is a key element of generation growth. Thermal power generation is forecast to rise by around 6% over the period, with nuclear demand up by 59%. Further details of BMI's long-term forecasts can be found later in this report.
