Jan. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Miami-Dade AHEC is helping one-third of all tobacco users that attend the Quit Smoking Now program to kick the habit for good.  Since January 2010 when Miami-Dade AHEC began offering FREE nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), they have helped an unprecedented 52% of participants complete the program.  Quit Smoking Now is a six-week program free to anyone interested in taking part.  Through the program, participants meet with trained tobacco cessation specialists that provide group or one-on-one counseling sessions consisting of informative tobacco education and tools to help tobacco users live a normal life without tobacco.

Latasha Moore, the Tobacco Program Manager for Miami-Dade AHEC, wants people to know that the cessation program is for all populations and all settings.  “We can set up a program for your employees or clients.  We can come to your workplace, doctor’s office, church, or any location we are needed.”  Moore is excited about her team of cessation specialists, saying they are “energetic and optimistic; they understand some of the barriers [tobacco users] face, especially in this time of economic crisis where people are dealing with extreme stress levels.”  Quit Smoking Now is supported by funding from the University of Miami AHEC Program.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness month, and as part of the effort to help people quit tobacco use, Miami-Dade AHEC will take part in this year’s Great American Smokeout on Thursday, November 18th.  The Great American Smokeout, a national event initiated by the American Cancer Society, aims to have people quit for one day in the hopes they will quit for a lifetime.  Locally, the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Campus will be hosting a health fair at Alamo Park from 11am to 3pm.  Vendors and service providers like Miami-Dade AHEC will showcase their products and services to the community to help them kick the habit.

Miami-Dade AHEC seeks to improve the health of individuals and communities by transforming healthcare through education.  We connect students to careers, professionals to communities, and communities to better health.  For more information about Miami-Dade AHEC and its programs and services, please visit our website at www.mdahec.org or contact our Marketing Coordinator directly at 305-597-3649 or Marketing@mdahec.org.  For more information on the Quit Smoking Now program, please call 305-597-3640, email SmokeFree@mdahec.org or visit www.mdahec.org/QuitNow.
