Prior to its release, many bloggers seemed to harbor doubts about the responsiveness of the Kinect motion sensor, however, these fears seems to have been forgotten - with Kinect receiving twice as many mentions across 12,000 blog posts, and over 80% of those mentions shedding positive light on the product. Further manual investigation also showed that the bloggers in question rated the XBox 360 a better all-round gaming system with a better catalog of titles, a factor which may explain the popularity of the latest add-on.
Neil Turner, who carried out the study on behalf of Bean Bag Bazaar said "In order to carry out the study we wrote a simple web crawler that randomly targeted blogs using a seed set of urls. The result was a study set of 3,000 blogs across varying niches / topics. We then pulled the last 4 posts from each blog and searched for product mentions for both Kinect and Wii. Posts which mentioned the product(s) were then fed through a basic sentiment analysis engine which gave us the final results. We also manually carried out some post-crawl investigation to further clarify the results. All in all, it seems to be a great start for Microsoft."
With Microsoft likely to improve and refine the Kinect system through periodic software updates, Nintendo will have to keep on its toes if it is to maintain its position as the family console of choice. Expect new innovations from Japanese manufacturer over the next 12 months.
