Jan. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Australia is one of the leading players in many segments of the mining industry. Owing to its exceptional geology, the country hosts a gamut of minerals including iron ore, nickel, bauxite, copper, gold, silver, uranium, diamonds, zinc and coal. The mining industry is a significant contributor to Australian GDP and is the country's most important export sector. Australia's mining sector is expected to generate revenue of about US$179.8bn in 2010-2011, up from US$119.6bn in 2005-2006. Revenue is expected to grow by about 21% in 2010-2011, having slumped by nearly 16% in the previous year in response to the global financial crisis. Despite that fall, revenue is expected to rise at an average annual rate of about 8.5% over the five years ending in 2010-2011. The division is expected to generate about 7.6% of Australia's GDP in 2010-2011.

Given its vast potential and good infrastructure, Australia is home to some of the biggest names in the global mining industry. Multinationals operating in the Australian mining industry include Australian companies BHP Billiton, Newcrest, Rio Tinto and Xstrata. Foreign investment rules are liberal and encourage inward investment. Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are subject to scrutiny by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The country has well-defined regulatory bodies and a well-established legal system that can be described as investor-friendly. In the case of specific mineral exploitation, a longstanding uranium mining ban was lifted in 2008, giving companies such as BHP Billiton the opportunity to tap on the country's large reserves of uranium.

Industry Forecast

BMI is optimistic about Australia's mining industry over our five-year forecast period to 2014, due to continued strong demand from Asian nations, notably China. As such, we believe that real growth will average 6.9% from 2009 out to 2014.
