The Fiat 500 is all about living each day to the fullest and celebrating life through self-expression as the corporation puts it the “Fiat 500 was built to satisfy our insatiable love for each day.”
Founded in 1899 by a group of investors including Giovanni Angelli in Italy, Fiat was created to manufacture automotive vehicles, railroad vehicles, tanks and aircrafts.
The first car ever created was the 3 ½ CV and only eight copies were built. The 3 ½ CV ran on a 697 cc boxer twin engine. Nine years later, the first-ever Fiat was shipped to the U.S. By 1910, Fiat became the largest automotive company in Italy, and the company decided to go global and started a Fiat plant in Poughkeepsie, NY that same year.
At that time, owning a Fiat meant you had money – this was before the introduction of Ford’s assembly line. In 1917, the factory shut down as U.S. entered World War I and the corporate Fiat lent all its time, money and resources to the war supplying the Allies with aircraft, engines, machine guns, trucks and ambulances.
Fiat has grown to be the world’s ninth largest carmaker as well as Italy’s largest carmaker as of 2009* and expanded its manufacturing line to motorcycles, aviation, commercial vehicles, agricultural and construction vehicles.
We want you to know the history of the Fiat brand. You see, some vehicles don’t make it as far as what Fiat has and that should symbolize something: a global icon for the history of automobiles. This is the vehicle that is the start of a legend. A modern symbol for Italian design.
This will be the first time the Fiat brand has come back to the States since 1983. Fiat has come a long way, but the culture, values, sentiment and sensibilities still remain embedded in the heart of the 500. Now Fiat is sold in over 80 countries and has become a global icon including the U, S of A, and, right here, in our great state of Oklahoma! Visit Fiat of Edmond Spring 2011.
