Deciding When To Have A Job Versus A Career

What is the difference between having a job and having a career? Simply put, a job is what you do while a career is what you love doing.

PRLog - Dec. 30, 2010 - WHAT IS A JOB?

Technically, a job is defined as anything that has to be done, as the action of completing a task or duty. In the employment world, a job can also be considered that which provides income to meet basic needs.

WHAT IS A CAREER?

A career, on the other hand, is technically defined as a profession or vocation that is pursued as life work. However, a career is more than income and benefits.

DECIDING WHAT YOU NEED

Before you start clipping the newspaper and online want ads, networking with old friends and colleagues, and blitzing companies with your resume and cover letters, take some time to decide what you need?  A job or a career. For many, current living situations will dictate whether the need is a job so the rent or mortgage is paid and groceries fill the cupboard, or if it is a career that can be pursued on a long-term basis. For others, a job versus a career is often decided by individual personalities. For them, a job might be a better choice because they have an opportunity to move from different situations when their interest begins to wane.

Other persons are better suited to a career in which they can spend time understanding the industry, working toward long-term goals and challenging themselves. If there is a particular industry in which you worked previously, it will be easier to move from one job to another in that same industry. There, the job seekers will find a constant employment and work information about the activities of employers.

Jobs

When young people work part-time in retail sales jobs, they aren't thinking of it as a career. The same goes for senior citizens who take on jobs after they've retired. So there must be a difference between a job and a career. Also a retired person has no reason to build a career, often he or she has already done so, and therefore the work is just for the purposes of money or to stay social and active.

Careers

Careers are about building on experience and advancing your job skills and knowledge. Due to this people usually care more about a career than they do about a job. Whether a job or career is the right fit for you will depend on your stage of life.
