As a geotechnical engineer, Kortan performs product designs, product verification testing, preliminary design applications, project consulting, installation, sales, marketing training, and education-based material development and presenting. Kortan has an extensive educational background having received his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from South Dakota State University in 1993 and his Master of Science degree in engineering in 1995. Almost immediately thereafter, Kortan began his professional career working for seven years as a consulting geotechnical engineer, four years working at Terracon, and maintains working as the director of engineering at FSI ever since 2008. He's a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI). Kortan has a wife and three sons and is the President of the Board of Directors for the Ollie Webb Center, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides services and support to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
