Celebrating The Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dec. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- We can mutually agree the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lives on and will forever be discussed and celebrated for the strength, character and commitment to equality for centuries to come. If Dr. King were alive today, he would be celebrating his 82nd birthday.

The New Year is just around the corner, 2011 marks the 43rd year since Dr. King was tragically assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Things would likely be different if Dr. King was still alive, he had that kind of positive influence on people from all walks of life.

Even though Mr. Vann never met Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he was introduced to Mrs Coretta Scott King during the 2001 Congressional Black Caucus. "I remember shaking Mrs King's hand and then hugging her and it was a seminal moment for me," states Vann.

The Pentagon had been struck by a plane, the World Trade Center had collasped and the plane in Pennsylvania had crashed and there we were in solidarity, moving forward in strength and Mrs Coretta Scott King stood firm and resolute in those defining moments as well.

"Were it not for Dr. King, likelihood is I would not have been able to serve as a military officer in the United States Air Force for over 20 years," states Vann. If the sacrifices made by Dr. King and other civil rights leaders did not take place, America would be a totally different country and not the power she is today.

He served over 20 years in the USAF, with 12 consecutive years in the Pentagon and a year on Capitol Hill working on the personal staff of Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy as a Capitol Hill Fellow. Vann retired in the rank of lieutenant colonel and is a highly decorated military officer.
