Southern Discomfort is quite the heartrending read. In her moving debut offering, author LaTonya Jones takes the reader deep into the hearts and minds of broken souls striving to be made whole again; in so doing, she successfully paints her true-to-life tale in the broad, poignant strokes of unfiltered reality. Though the characters in Southern Discomfort are forced to contend with the disastrous aftereffects of Hurricane Katrina, Jones skillfully frames their plight as one to which survivors of any unforeseen tragedy are sure to relate. In the face of loss, sorrow, anger, and lingering pain, our character is put to the ultimate test, and how we manage to emerge from crisis ultimately says more about us than any claim we may make of ourselves. Such is the central lesson of Southern Discomfort: win, lose, or draw, we can ill afford to lose ourselves in the process as our destinies – unknown as they may be – eventually unfold.
