Dec. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- Depuy Orthopaedics, a product division of Johnson & Johnson, issued a hip replacement recall on August 26, 2010 for all patients who received a hip replacement that is called the Depuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System and also the ASR XL Acetabular Hip System.  This recall is specifically for recipients who received this hip implant after July 2003.

The reason why a recall was made public is because of complaints with the hip surgery and data is showing that recipients are requiring the need of another hip replacement faster than expected.  Actual data states that 1 out of 8 patients who already have the Depuy implants are in need of a corrective surgery.  Those numbers are indicative of a problem with the implants which in normal cases for a surgical procedure like this the acceptable standards should fall in the range of 1 out of 20 patients should need corrective surgery.

Another major concern with this hip replacement surgery has been the discovery of high levels of toxic metals in the bloodstream of patients.  The long term effect of the metals in the body is not known but patients are experiencing certain symptoms which are believed to be as a result of those toxins as well as pain from the surgery.

For patients who have received the Depuy hip replacement surgery after July 2003, whether you are experiencing pain or other symptoms or not, you should consider checking with your doctor and stay informed on the latest information about Depuy Orthopaedics.  Below is a list of common symptoms that patients are experiencing with the hip implant:

Serious or Lingering Pain
Swelling
Loosening of Implant
Fracture of Hip Bone
Dislocation of Implant
Memory Loss
Hand Tremors
Tinnitus
Hearing Loss
Diminished Coordination

If you have had a hip implant within the past 7 years but are unaware what type of implant it is do yourself a favor and contact your doctor for those details.  Be sure also to have your blood test done to test for high levels of toxins such as cobalt and chromium.
