Dec. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- So Christmas is nearly upon us, and in the spirit of giving I’m going to provide you with 10 quick tips that you can use to boost and monitor your rankings in search engines. These tips are intended to de-mystify some of the concepts behind Search Engine Optimization; practical advice that you can apply today!

Tip #1) Build Up Back-links

Back-links, as you might be able to guess, referrers to the links from other sites to your site. Every active link from one website to yours is like a vote in the eyes of search engines like Google. The more links to your site, the better you are going to rank in search engines. Make sure these links are active links (i.e. clickable) otherwise it will count for nothing.

Tip #2) Create Organic Links

Following on from Tip #1, try to ensure that these links to your site are organic, i.e. they come from reputable and relevant sites. For example if you are selling computers and you get a link from a large site that reviews computers, you are on to a winner. The internet is founded on the principle of providing users with useful information, and this is still true today.

Tip #3) Monitor Google Page Rank (PR)

Google Page Rank is a measurable scale of how important a site is in the eyes of Google. It is measured on the scale of 0-10, with 10 being the most important. Keep up to date with your SEO progress by monitoring your Page Rank; you can either download the Google Page Rank toolbar for your web browser or visit a site like www.prchecker.info. It is also important to note that if you have a link from a PR6 website, this is going to count for more than a link from a PR5 website, so when you’re building up back-links be sure to keep this in mind.

Tip #4) Optimize Your Landing Page

Optimizing your landing page, or homepage, will ensure search engines index and display your site correctly, and will also help to boost your rankings for specific searches. Most of the elements you need to optimize reside in the header tag of your site’s html code. The ‘title’ tag is possibly the most important element of the header to optimize, and carries the most weight with Search Engine rankings. The ‘description’ meta tag is important in that it controls how search engines display the information about your site in the search results. The ‘keywords’ meta tag is also relevant, but no longer holds any real SEO value, mainly because it has been over-used by webmasters in the past. Make sure you also include specific keywords in the text body of your landing page, but don’t overuse these.

Tip #5) Provide Useful, Well Written Information

Google loves a website that provides well written and useful information for its users. Even if your site is a business website used to advertise your product or service, try to include a section where you can display additional information that helps people to understand your product or service a little better. For example if you are selling wine, dedicate a section to the science involved in growing grapes.

Tip #6) Write articles

Writing articles is one of the best ways to promote your website, and build up back links from reputable sites organically. It’s popular with search engines because you are providing useful information that is relevant to your organisation. If you write just 1 article with an active link to your website, submit it to 10 article directories, and 10 webmasters on each directory add it to their site, that’s 1000 back-links to your site already. Not bad going for 1 article. Also it’s worth noting that Google loves Wikipedia; how many times have you searched for something and the number 1 result is a Wikipedia article on the subject? If you can find a subject that is relevant to your site and that hasn’t already been written about, submit it to Wikipedia along with a link to your website.

Tip #7) Submit Your Site to Directories

This is a slightly less SEO friendly way of promoting your site, but nonetheless it is a great way to get a website in search engine rankings quickly. Again submit to directories that have a higher page rank to boost the power of each link. http://www.addurl.nu is a good place to start, with a huge list of directories to submit your site to. You will have a choice of a free listing, a free listing with a reciprocal link or a paid submission. Not all directories will accept your site, unless of course you are willing to pay for a submission.

Tip #8) Post in Forums

Posting replies to threads in relevant forums is another great way to build up back-links. Make sure the forums are relevant to your business/profession and that you are providing useful information. In other words, don’t spam! Make sure you leave an active link to your website at the end of each post.

Tip #9) Use Header Tags

Using header tags (H1, H2  etc) in the body of your html code carries some weight when it comes to SEO, and should be implemented wherever possible.  Don’t overuse these though, as Google and other search engines tend to frown on this.

Tip #10) Have Patience!

This seems like a bit of a silly tip but in actual fact it may be the most important. SEO is kind of like a strategic game and the rules are changing all the time. It’s a long process and you won’t see results immediately. However, if you keep up with the latest rules and keep going you‘ll be on to a winner!

Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year
